I am offering private lessons/tutoring in mathematics, music, and Chinese. I reside in Newtown, PA and offer in-person lessons for local students. I also can teach virtually.
Math Tutoring
As of Dec. 2024, I have been tutoring elementary and secondary school students in math for two years. My college mathematical studies focused on pure math, and I also took courses in math and science pedagogy. Prior to college, I was an advanced math student who took AP Calculus BC and scored a 5 on the exam as a 10th grader. In middle school, I participated in MathCounts, making it to state level in both 7th and 8th grade and placing 3rd at county level in 8th grade. In high school, I attended the five-week summer intensive MathILy, where advanced high school students learn college-level math in a creative and interactive way. I also scored 800 on the math section of the SAT and 1590 overall, without attending any test-prep class. My approach to math tutoring emphasizes problem-solving, as it not only applies to math class, but also to life in general. I am eager to work both with students who need support to keep up with schoolwork and with students who desire a greater challenge. Check out my essay, Three Reasons to Learn and Teach Mathematics, for more about my educational philosophy.
Music Lessons
I’ve developed a great variety of musical skills, but primarily I am a classically-trained pianist and composer. Thus I can teach beginner to advanced classical piano, beginner to advanced music theory, and composition for solo instrument/voice or for small ensemble. I can also teach beginner to intermediate viola, thanks to my experience in school orchestra. As a pianist, I have experience performing both solo and as a collaborative artist playing in/for ensembles such as choirs, musical theatre pit orchestras, and instrumental chamber music. From 10th-12th grade, I participated in numerous PMEA festivals from district to All-Eastern level, usually accompanying choirs but also playing in a concert band and an orchestra. I also earned a DipABRSM in Piano Performance in high school. Currently I work as the accompanist for the Senior Choir of the Pennsylvania Youth Chorale based in Abington and also perform solo gigs. My compositional work is varied, ranging from tonal classical music to experimental music to performances that incorporate improvisation and movement. You can check out some of my musical work on this page of my website and on my Youtube. In lessons, I focus on the student’s personal goals and interests, choosing technical and creative exercises that holistically prepare the student to be the musician they want to be. If structure is helpful, I can follow a method book, but that is not necessary.
Chinese
I grew up in a Mandarin-speaking family and attended the Plainsboro Chinese School on Sundays from first through tenth grade. As a ninth grader, I scored 291/300 on the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Level 4 (the high-intermediate level of the Chinese Proficiency Test), and in 10th grade, I scored a 5 on the AP Chinese exam. Thus I can teach Mandarin Chinese from beginner to intermediate level.
More About Me
I attended public school in the Council Rock School District and graduated from CR North in 2019. I then attended Haverford College and graduated in 2023 with a BA in music (with honors) and in mathematics. Since January 2025, I have been studying virtually through California Institute of Integral Studies, doing a dual program that combines an MA in East-West Psychology and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing. As you can tell, I have a wide range of interests and a humanistic vision: I truly love working with people to bring out the best in them, intellectually, artistically, and spiritually.
I am proudly neurodivergent and thus would love to work with people who learn and function differently from the norm! If there’s a particular teaching/learning style that works best for you, please let me know and I will make sure to meet your needs when possible.
